Andy's Country
Hi. I'm the person that
you have been listening to on Thursday and Friday mornings. I have been with WBRO
since October of 2000. Most of that time in my current 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. time
slot. I am glad to get an opportunity to tell you about myself.
Back about the time that Rock
n' Roll started to bust loose in a big way; things were heating up in about all other
areas in America. I was not really sure what to make of a lot of it, but my oldest
sister was ten years older than I and she was playing records and listening to the radio a
whole lot. Chuck Berry, Pat Boone, Bill Haley, The Platters, Patsy Cline, Elvis,
Kitty Wells... you name them, I was listening too... and liking what I was hearing.
I guess you could say that I have been listening to radio all of my life. Of course
most of that listening has been to commercial radio. Commercial radio has changed a
lot over the years. A lot of that change has not been good. Heavily repeated
music and other programming, excessive advertising, restrictive formats and offensive
announcers, are some of the things that sent me listening down to the left end of the
dial. I discovered public radio. Now, if I fast forward to the twenty-first
century, I can tell you that a newspaper story about WBRO caught my eye. I thought
about how it would be if I gave announcing a try for myself. I sent a letter to Dr.
Herb Smith, the owner of the station and here I am. Herb started things off here
with a choice of three different formats. I know a whole lot more about Country
music that either Big Band or Adult Contemporary, so it was natural that I chose that for
my program. I focus on Classic Country music for the most part. I hope that
the mix of music keeps things lively and interesting. Sometimes I go way back (Sons
of the Pioneers, Carter Family). Sometimes I will throw in a little contemporary
(Dixie Chicks, John Sines). The artists you will hear the most are ones like Merle
Haggard, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash.
I really enjoy the time spent at
the station. I hope you do too. If you do, be sure to tell other folks about
your community radio station. Feel free to call anytime I am here. I am always
glad to hear from listeners and appreciate comments or suggestions. Tune in on 89.9
FM every Thursday and Friday mornings from 7:00-10:00 a.m. for Andy's morning Country.
